China: stale mooncakes no more

To start, we have Patti Waldmeir, the FT’s Shanghai correspondent, on what happened when China’s health inspectors turned their attention to mooncakes, the traditional food of this month’s autumn festival. Her story starts below the break.

Nothing captures the reader’s eye like a good food safety scandal. Especially the eyes of a growing number of middle-class Chinese, increasingly concerned that Chinese food is bad for their health. Chinese newspaper readers are fed a steady diet of stories about exploding watermelons and pork on steroids.
