The sweeping victory of Taiwan’s opposition party in local elections this weekend has thrown a wrench into what looked liked a successful path towards resolving one of the world’s longest and thorniest political disputes.
For six years, mainland China and the self-ruled island of Taiwan have been drawing closer economically. Both sides have been removing the easiest barriers to integration with an eye to eventually finding a peaceful solution to Taiwan’s status.
Beijing claims Taiwan as a renegade province but has not ruled it since the end of the civil war in 1949.
