I’m pregnant with my third child. I went back to work after the first two with little enjoyment and a good deal of exhaustion but this time feel like jacking it in. I don’t need the money as I am married to a lawyer, and I would like to spend more time with the children. But what worries me is how much of my esteem is tied up in the idea of my job, in saying to people at parties: “I’m a partner at a big law firm.” I fear that if I say instead: “I’m a mother,” no one will want to talk to me and I will be diminished. Is this worry pathetic?
