Legal experts say Hong Kong authorities acted well within the law in allowing former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden to leave the Chinese territory, despite strong criticism of the decision from the White House.
Mr Snowden, who is wanted by the US for leaking documents detailing extensive surveillance operations conducted by the US National Security Agency, left Hong Kong on an aircraft bound for Moscow on Sunday morning. Ecuador is expected to be his final destination, where he will seek asylum.
The White House said it was “disappointed” that Hong Kong authorities had allowed Mr Snowden to “flee”, despite having issued an extradition request over the weekend.
