Students at one of China’s top universities faced off against faculty and security guards on Friday in a rare campus protest against the suppression of a Marxist student society, as Beijing intensified its crackdown against unauthorised political activity.
“Give us back our Marxist student society, resist violence on campus,” the group of about a dozen students chanted, holding placards in front of Peking University’s Marxism department building.
Guards and teachers soon surrounded the group, snatching placards and even students’ glasses, and tried to forcibly disband them by wrestling individuals away from the group.
