Estée Lauder chief Fabrizio Freda on winning over millennials

Fabrizio Freda, chief executive of Estée Lauder, grew up in Naples, though his business inspiration comes from an Italian born in Florence: Niccolò Machiavelli.

I remind him that he once cited The Prince, written in 1513, as the book that had most influenced his leadership style. He

reminds me that his admiration is “not about the Machiavellian way to do things. No, I don’t stand at all behind that.” What he does admire is that “at a time when analytics were not invented, [it offers] the idea you really need to understand the environment you are in, to determine the right strategies for that environment”.
