China set to miss launch date for carbon trading

China is unlikely to begin national carbon trading before the end of this decade.

The 2017 start date for a national emissions trading scheme, announced to great fanfare in Washington on Friday, referred only to a preliminary regulatory rollout, people with knowledge of China’s plans said yesterday.

The date featured among measures jointly announced by the US and China during a visit by China president Xi Jinping to Washington and has been contrasted with the lack of national emissions trading in the US, where the notion is politically controversial. World Resources Institute, an environmental non-governmental organisation called the Chinese timetable “courageous”.
