MAO CENTRAL TO MODERN STATE'S PATRIOTIC VALUES

Three decades after his death, Mao Zedong seems as popular as ever among patriotic Chinese internet users.

“The East is Red”, a bombastic Cultural Revolution hymn glorifying Mao, has emerged as the clear leader in a competition run by a government-sponsored website to find the nation's favourite patriotic song. So far, the runner-up is “The sun is reddest, Chairman Mao is dearest”.

The timing of the competition is not accidental – it is part of a large-scale “Patriotic Education” campaign in the run-up to the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1.
