Mercedes-Benz owner Daimler and China’s Geely announced a new joint venture to build electric Smart cars in China and sell them in the global market.
The two groups said the next-generation Smart cars will be built in 2022, with the aim of making the lossmaking Smart brand a “pioneer of urban mobility.”
Dieter Zetsche, the outgoing CEO of Daimler, said the Hambach production site in France will continue making an electric Smart car, too, safeguarding jobs, but a new site in China will let the brand expand.
