Tens of thousands of Hong Kong citizens will gather on Thursday night for their annual commemoration of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, but activists are more divided than ever as the struggle for democracy in the Chinese territory intensifies.
Many will light candles and vow to “build a democratic China” at the traditional sombre vigil in Victoria Park as they remember the hundreds, if not thousands, of students who were killed when the Chinese government sent tanks into the Beijing square to break up pro-democracy protests.
But students at Hong Kong’s leading university have broken away from the main event, insisting they have no obligation to help the mainland and that “Hong Kong people are only responsible for democracy in Hong Kong”.
