Pro-democracy politicians in Hong Kong should veto China’s proposal for universal suffrage in the territory, according to roughly half the respondents in a new poll.
China last month announced a long-awaited plan for universal suffrage in Hong Kong – giving the public the right to vote for chief executive for the first time – but included conditions that essentially bar critics of Beijing from running.
The 27 lawmakers who make up the opposition pan-Democrat camp have vowed to veto the plan, which requires two-thirds approval in the 70-member Legislative Council (Legco).
