How does a rational actor deal with an irrational world? By trying to make it more rational. That, at least, was AP Møller-Maersk’s strategy for its underperforming container shipping line – until this week.

The Chinese government’s decision to scuttle Maersk’s proposed global shipping alliance will keep the industry that much more irrational, for that much longer.

The alliance, called “P3”, would have seen Maersk, Mediterranean Shipping Company and CMA CGM of France pool some 250 vessels. Each company would have been able to put cargo on other companies’ ships, helping them fill the very large container ships they are buying.
