UK turns to Chinese nuclear investors to keep the lights on

Britain has turned to China to revive its hopes of building more nuclear power plants to help meet its energy needs, handing a lifeline to a project that has been dogged by delays.

It is another sign of turbulence in the plan for a new generation of nuclear reactors despite the government’s offer of a range of subsidies to help keep the lights on.

The project near Sellafield, Cumbria, needs to find investors after Spain’s Iberdrola and France’s GDF decided to cut their stakes in the NuGen consortium, becoming the latest in a string of European companies to reduce their exposure to British nuclear.
