The French champagne industry will redouble its efforts to protect its label in the US after China agreed to restrict its use solely to sparkling wines produced in the French region, writes Scheherazade Daneshkhu.
“We are very pleased that the long and complex negotiations have succeeded,” said Thibaut Le Mailloux, head of communications at Le Comité Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne, the French trade body.
Speaking from Beijing a day after China said it would register champagne as an official geographic label, Mr Le Mailloux said: “The goal is to achieve global protection so we still have work to do.”
