Under pressure over its close ties with North Korea, China has tried to take the diplomatic initiative with a call for “emergency consultations” among the six governments already involved in nuclear talks with Pyongyang.
Wu Dawei, one of China’s deputy foreign ministers, said on Sunday that Beijing would invite the governments of North and South Korea, Russia, Japan and the US to talks in early December.
Ever since the shelling of a South Korean island last week by North Korean forces, Beijing has faced mounting calls from other governments to rein in Pyongyang, which relies on Chinese aid and political protection.
