Bright Scholar, the NYSE-listed Chinese schools group, has paid £150m to buy CATS Colleges, a network of schools in the UK, China and North America, in the latest sign of growing Chinese interest in international education.
The deal signals a growing focus on “foundation” courses combining upper school academic qualifications with intensive English language support to prepare foreign students for applications to universities notably in the UK and the US.
The acquisition comes as British universities facing funding pressure are increasingly interested in attracting foreign students. The applicants are typically charged several times the fees levied on EU students, and a large share come from China.
