The US and China’s top foreign policy officials pledged to work together on a host of issues during talks in Beijing on Wednesday.
John Kerry, US secretary of state, and Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister, held a press conference that was three hours late, speaking to the volume of ground the two had to cover beforehand.
On North Korea’s nuclear warhead test this month, Mr Wang said sanctions were “not an end in themselves”, signalling that China would push back against a maximalist UN Security Council resolution favoured by Washington aimed at punishing Pyongyang, its ally.
