Pentagon nominee hints at shift on aiding Ukraine

The Obama administration’s nominee to run the Pentagon said yesterday that he backed giving weapons to Ukraine, the strongest indication yet that the US is preparing to shift its approach and intervene more directly in the conflict.

Speaking at his confirmation hearing to be the next secretary of defence, Ashton Carter said that he was “inclined” to begin supplying the Ukrainian government with the kinds of heavy weapons it has been asking for.

“We need to support Ukraine in defending themselves,” he told the Senate hearing.
