Japan reacted with outrage and horror to the apparent murder of Kenji Goto, the journalist held hostage by Isis militants, as the incident reignited debate about the country’s tradition of pacifism.
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, known as Isis, released a video yesterday that appeared to show the beheading of Goto, a freelance journalist captured in Syria last year.
In the video, the masked man featured in at least six Isis videos, nicknamed Jihadi John, addressed Shinzo Abe, Japanese prime minister, to say he had made a “reckless decision to take part in an unwinnable war”.
