Russia has hit back at western sanctions over the Ukraine crisis with import bans on food from the US and EU in a retaliatory step designed to hurt foreign farmers.
President Vladimir Putin issued a decree banning or limiting “certain kinds of agricultural produce, raw materials and food products” from countries that have imposed sanctions on Russian “persons or entities”.
In theory, the order allows Moscow to ban all agricultural and food products from the US, the EU, Canada, Japan and Australia – a scenario which economists say could do significant damage to exporting nations.
