China widens net in anti-monopoly campaign

The world’s most powerful brands, from Microsoft to Mercedes, are becoming targets for anti-monopoly investigations in China, leaving all multinationals wondering if their Chinese investments could be next.

The campaign is being led by China’s state planning agency, the National Development and Reform Commission, which has focused on alleged anti-competitive behaviour in pharmaceuticals, milk powder, technology and the car sector.

In several dramatic and heavily-publicised raids in recent days, NDRC investigators have visited the China offices of Microsoft and Mercedes-Benz to interrogate executives and confiscate computers.
