Germany is set to back sweeping EU economic sanctions against Russia as long as the burden is spread fairly across the union, according to Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Germany’s foreign minister.
Mr Steinmeier said in a German radio interview yesterday that the EU had “created the conditions” to “increase the pressure” on Russia through the proposed sanctions in finance, defence and energy equipment.
But he added that the planned measures had to be balanced across member states. “If there are negative consequences, then they must be borne across Europe as a whole,” he said.
