US to boost security in Europe

President Barack Obama arrived in Europe yesterday with an announcement that he would request $1bn from Congress to finance additional troop rotations in central and eastern Europe despite the recent easing of tensions over Ukraine.

Mr Obama’s announcement, as he arrived in Poland, came less than two weeks after the west’s most urgent goal – ensuring a credible and violence-free election in Ukraine – was achieved with little overt Russian interference.

It appeared at odds with the relief in some quarters in Europe at Russia’s recent withdrawing of troops from the Ukrainian border.
