A Jeep ploughed into a crowd of tourists and burst into flames on Monday, forcing a police lockdown on Tiananmen Square, China’s most symbolic space for protesting government injustice.
Online photographs showed the flaming vehicle crashed against the marble bridges that lead to the Forbidden City and at least two people stretched out on the ground.
The official Xinhua news agency said that three passengers in the vehicle plus two tourists had died and that more than 30 others, including policemen, were injured. The area of the crash is normally full of tour groups.
