Berlin claims US targetted Merkel mobile phone

Angela Merkel's mobile phone may have been the target of US surveillance, the German government said on Wednesday.

Ms Merkel phoned Barack Obama to make clear that she unequivocally condemns such practises if the information proves to be correct, government spokesman Steffen Seibert said.

The White House denied that the US had access to Ms Merkel's phone calls. The president assured the chancellor that the United States is not monitoring and will not monitor the communications of Chancellor Merkel, it said. It declined to comment on whether it had done so in the past.
