I have awarded a small number of people in the non-governmental organisation I run a modest year-end bonus as a thank you for exceptional performance. I asked for this to be kept secret but it has leaked out and is the cause of much resentment. Now more people claim to be demotivated as a result of not receiving a bonus than are feeling good about getting one. Shall I scrap the scheme next year? Or make it more transparent? Or is there a better way of doing it?
