Suzuki demands VW divorce

Volkswagen’s fraying alliance with Suzuki has all but unravelled after the Japanese carmaker demanded that VW sell the nearly 20 per cent of Suzuki it purchased in a strategic tie-up less than two years ago.

“We asked for a divorce,” Osamu Suzuki, Suzuki’s chairman, said on Monday. “There is no longer any purpose to VW’s shareholding.”

Ties between the carmakers have deteriorated to the point that executives are said to no longer be speaking to each other. On Sunday, VW accused Suzuki of violating the December 2009 partnership when it struck an engine supply deal with Italy’s Fiat in June.
