The legitimacy of the Group of 20 leading economies rests on “its abilities to take decisions”, Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, told the World Economic Forum on Thursday.
Mr Sarkozy believes that the G20’s emergence as the pre-eminent forum of world powers could be undermined if becomes a high-level talking shop.
However, the French president appeared to play down the likely success of his ambitious attempt to overhaul the international monetary system, the centrepiece of France’s agenda for its G20 presidency, which began in November.
