Britain’s elite universities are in danger of losing ground to international competitors in countries such as the US and France because of cuts to next year’s teaching budgets, ministers have been warned.
In a letter to the higher education regulator on Monday, Vince Cable, business secretary, and David Willetts, universities minister, said teaching grants would be cut by 6 per cent. The cuts come a year before universities will have their incomes boosted by a rise in tuition fees.
The Russell Group of 20 research-led universities, which includes Oxford and Cambridge, said the funding gap would be “really challenging”.
