The French are markedly more pessimistic about their economic prospects for the coming decade than any of their counterparts in the European Union or the US, fearing they will have a progressively lower standard of living and get less state help, according to an opinion poll.
A Harris poll for the Financial Times asked people in Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the US to assess whether they felt they had better living standards now than 10 years ago and whether they thought they would be better off by 2020.
The poll found that despite the severity of the US recession, Americans were more optimistic than Europeans about the prospects ahead.
