The Problem
I have just been made a department head and have been interviewing a deputy. The two leading internal candidates are both capable – but I decided to go with the one I felt I would work with best. Unfortunately, some idiot in HR has just announced that the other candidate has got the job. He is delighted and has just asked me when he begins, while the other guy is angry that I did not tell him that he had not got the job. Should I go with the wrong candidate, or try to unscramble the situation?
