Boris Johnson has unveiled a new three-tier lockdown strategy for England set to come into force on Wednesday, as the UK prime minister grapples with surging coronavirus infections and hospitalisations.
In a statement to MPs, Mr Johnson admitted that existing lockdown rules were too “complex” and said the new system would be clearer for the benefit of local leaders and the public alike.
Under the new restrictions, which must be approved by MPs on Tuesday, areas of England will be categorised as being on medium, high or very-high alert over Covid-19.
