The South Korean government on Wednesday ordered striking doctors to return to work as the country grapples with its worst coronavirus outbreak in six months.
Thousands of doctors were due to stage a three-day strike from Wednesday in protest against government plans to increase the number of medical students by 4,000 over the next 10 years in order to better prepare for public health crises such as the coronavirus pandemic.
Health minister Park Neung-hoo called the collective action during the pandemic “deeply regrettable,” warning striking doctors against “putting the citizens’ lives and safety in danger.”
