Before lockdown, I was fairly sure I could never deeply love an animal. I know this is shameful to admit. In Britain, an indifference to pets is considered a sinister stain on one’s character.
So on meeting a dog, I’ve always feigned an interest in breeds and hesitantly attempted some patting. I doubt anyone was convinced, but social norms were at least upheld.
However, my wife was also fairly sure that she could never deeply love me if I could not love animals. And at the beginning of this year, the stakes were raised. We were to take on a cat from a friend who had fallen for a woman who was allergic to them.
