Japan will boost the size of its coronavirus spending package by ¥8.9tn ($83bn) as it revealed the hefty cost of a measure to give ¥100,000 to everybody in the country.
The disclosure came as Shinzo Abe’s cabinet scrambled to pass a revised budget after a rebellion by the prime minister’s coalition partners forced him to tear up earlier plans.
Changes to a cabinet-approved budget have almost no precedent in Japan and highlight the extraordinary political pressure on Mr Abe to widely spread the benefits of his coronavirus package.
