Audi, the German auto brand that has dominated China’s premium-priced car sales for three decades, is on course to be overtaken by rival Mercedes-Benz in the world’s largest market.
The car group, owned by Volkswagen, sold 491,040 cars in China in the year to September — the first three quarters — compared with 514,786 sold by Mercedes-Benz, owned by German carmaker Daimler, over the same period.
Audi has been China’s top selling premium car brand since the 1990s, but its more recent models have fallen out of favour with some of Beijing’s wealthiest consumers.
