Boris Johnson has conceded defeat on his promise to take the UK out of the EU by October 31 and challenged MPs to give him a general election on December 12, arguing that a “broken parliament” was responsible for the deadlock.
In the wake of his defeat on the timetable for his Brexit deal legislation, the prime minister sought to regain the initiative by daring MPs to vote on Monday for a pre-Christmas election.
He said that if a poll was not approved, he would freeze his Brexit legislation and turn Westminster into a zombie parliament. But if an election was agreed, he would bring the bill back to give MPs until November 6 to secure Brexit.
