China has agreed to try to reach a deal next year with the EU on opening its markets to foreign investors in what Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, hailed as “a breakthrough” in relations with Beijing.
China and the EU have set a 2020 target date to agree a long-planned investment treaty, which Brussels has identified as its main route to improve access to the Chinese market.
After meetings between senior EU officials and Chinese premier Li Keqiang in Brussels on Tuesday, a joint statement also signalled China’s willingness to discuss EU concerns about state support for its companies and forced technology transfer.
