The US government has ordered a review into the way in which the country’s aviation regulator approved the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft after two crashes in five months.
Elaine Chao, the transport secretary, has asked Calvin Scovel, the independent inspector general, to carry out an audit of the certification process for the troubled jet, her department announced on Tuesday.
In a memo to Mr Scovel, Ms Chao said: “Safety is the top priority of the department, and all of us are saddened by the fatalities resulting from the recent accidents involving two Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft in Indonesia and Ethiopia.
