US importers shift China orders over trade war fears

Producers of Chinese goods for export to the US are moving some manufacturing to try to avoid fallout if a trade war between Washington and Beijing escalates, with days left for the two countries to strike a deal.

Talks between senior US and Chinese officials are due to step up in Washington on Thursday. Tariffs on $200bn of Chinese imports to the US will increase from 10 per cent to 25 per cent if no deal is reached by March 1.

Asian trade sources contacted by the Financial Times said US importers were changing their buying behaviour over fears that the scope of Donald Trump’s tariffs will be widened.
