Beijing and Washington on Wednesday sought to reassure shaken financial markets their trade ceasefire could lead to a lasting peace after a global sell-off exposed widespread investor fears that a G20 deal lacked any substantive agreement.
In its first comments since the weekend truce between Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, and Donald Trump, his US counterpart, China’s government said it was “confident” a comprehensive agreement could be reached before a tariff freeze expires in three months.
Mr Trump hailed the “very strong signals” from Beijing, and sought to pin the days-long silence from Chinese leaders, which helped spook markets, to “their long trip, including stops” from the G20 in Argentina.
