China film star Fan Bingbing fined $70m for tax evasion

Fan Bingbing, China’s highest paid actress, has been fined hundred of millions of renminbi for tax evasion, returning her to the spotlight after disappearing from the public eye for months.

Ms Fan was personally fined Rmb479m ($70m) after Chinese authorities found the actress and her companies had failed to pay more than Rmb255m in taxes, according to state news agency Xinhua. Ms Fan and the companies were ordered to pay a total of more than Rmb850m in fines and unpaid taxes.

The report said that if Ms Fan paid within the “prescribed time limit”, she would not be investigated for “criminal responsibility”.
