China’s global ‘community’ falls short of rhetoric

What exactly is a “community with a shared future for mankind” and should we care?

The British, as a German ambassador once said to me, are a practical people. We do not share the Chinese Communist party’s addiction to theory, dialectics and plans, far less its love of rhetoric and slogans.

In China, the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era political theory is ubiquitous, so much so that common reverence for the country’s leader recalls the start of St John’s Gospel: “In the beginning was the Thought and the Thought was with Xi and the Thought was Xi.”
