Mike Pompeo, US secretary of state, met a top North Korean official on Wednesday evening in New York, as the White House said talks with Pyongyang about a summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un were “very positive”.
Mr Pompeo dined in New York with Kim Yong Chol, a hardline general and close adviser to Kim Jong Un, and was expected to hold a second meeting on Thursday. Mr Kim is the most senior North Korean to visit the US since 2000.
A state department official described the meeting between Mr Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol as “the two top dogs on each side” trying to put the pieces in place for a first meeting between a US president and North Korean leader.
