China and the US opened a second round of high-level talks aimed at averting a trade war, amid signs of the Trump administration’s internal divide over how to deal with Beijing.
Chinese officials are hopeful that Liu He, President Xi Jinping’s top economic adviser, can leave Washington this weekend with a deal that would spare ZTE, the Chinese telecoms equipment manufacturer, from a corporate death sentence.
But President Donald Trump, who continued to face criticism over his softening on ZTE on Thursday, played down the possibility of a quick deal.
