The world is awash with the idea of self-improvement. Be more mindful, we are told. Meditate, set yourself goals, take regular exercise, eat clean and you will be happier, healthier and more successful.

You only have to look to the growth of the multibillion-dollar “wellbeing” industry to see how the idea has become woven into society, modern business and management education.

The cult-like spectres of absolute personal responsibility and resilience have become entrenched in our day-to-day lives.
