China’s leading technology companies led by Tencent filed a world-beating number of global trademark applications last year, as the country best known for copying seeks to ramp up in-house innovation and go global.
Tencent, which combines gaming, social media and payments among a plethora of other activities, filed 4,100 trademark applications in 2016, according to TrademarkNow, a trademark search platform.
Also in the top 20 were LeEco, the cash-strapped tech group that began life making televisions, with 2,200 applications, and ecommerce group Alibaba on 1,700.
