Yahoo acknowledged on Thursday that data for at least 500m user accounts was stolen from the company’s network in late 2014 by what it believes was “a state-sponsored actor.”
The embattled internet group said the information stolen may have included names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers.
Yahoo stressed however that payment card data and bank account information has not been compromised. It said:
