Warcraft film takes China by storm

The computer game World of Warcraft has sustained millions of Chinese gamers over the past decade. So it should be hardly surprising that the film adaptation Warcraft has been a smash hit in the Middle Kingdom, dwarfing revenues elsewhere during its opening week.

Young Chinese have flocked to see the fantasy action film, often watching it with friends who have played the game together for years. The film accounted for 74 per cent of box-office sales on its opening weekend.

“It’s very important for us to see this movie. You can only understand if you play the game,” enthused White Fog Dumpling, 26, a civil servant from eastern China who would only give his gaming name. “It’s a virtual world where there’s friendship and feeling.”
