Fight to become Indonesia’s Alibaba begins

With a population of 250m and rising smartphone adoption, Indonesia would appear to have the fundamental qualities of a big ecommerce market.

However, just as consumers developed a taste for online shopping, the government banned foreign investment in the sector in 2014, with creeping protectionism and cumbersome bureaucracy curbing growth further.

That may be poised to change, as Jakarta removes limits on foreign direct investment (FDI) and pledges to support the industry.
